Stone worktops in Godalming

Godalming is four miles south of Guildford, upstream on the Wey, and we fit stone worktops right across it, from old houses near the town centre to Farncombe terraces and the newer estates on the edges. Quartz, granite, porcelain or marble, for a whole new kitchen or new tops on the units you have, all measured in the room.

The town that lit its streets first

On 26 September 1881 Godalming switched on what the town museum describes as the world’s first public electricity supply. A water wheel at Westbrook Mill, Pullman’s tannery on the Wey, drove a Siemens dynamo that powered arc lamps in the streets and Swan bulbs in a handful of shops and houses. It was dearer than gas, and on 1 May 1884 the town went back to gas lamps until electricity returned in 1903.

Plenty of Godalming houses date from before that experiment. The oldest surviving buildings in the centre go back to the sixteenth century, and in houses that old the walls are rarely straight. Templating in the room means the stone follows the wall, not a tape-measured guess.

Bargate stone and older kitchens

Many of Godalming’s older buildings are faced in Bargate stone, a honey-coloured sandstone quarried around the town until the Second World War. If you are fitting a kitchen in a period house and want the worktop to sit well with stone walls or a stone fireplace, warm-toned granites and creamy quartz designs tend to work better than stark white.

From Farncombe to Ockford Ridge

Godalming grew in stages. Farncombe joined the borough in 1892 and its station opened in 1897, council housing began in Farncombe in 1920, the first 168 homes at Ockford Ridge were finished in 1931, and Binscombe and Bargate Wood followed in the 1950s and 1980s. Kitchens in homes from those decades have often been refitted since, and where the units are sound, new stone on the existing units is a quick upgrade.

From first call to fitted worktop

  1. Price it

Ring 01483 694680 or send the form with rough sizes and a stone in mind, and you get a price back.

  2. Measure it

Once the cabinets are in and level, we come and template the room, recording every wall, corner and opening.

  3. Cut it

Back at the workshop the slab is wet-cut to that template: sink and hob holes, edge profile, any drainer grooves.

  4. Fit it

We install and finish the stone, ready for the sink and hob to be connected. What happens at each stage.
