Porcelain worktops in Guildford
Porcelain worktops give Guildford homeowners a surface that resists heat, stains and sunlight in a single slab. They come in large sheets with striking marble, stone and concrete designs, and in slim thicknesses that suit a modern kitchen. We measure, cut and install it, including in garden rooms and outdoor kitchens where most worktops struggle.
- Heat and UV resistant
- Non-porous, no sealing
- Slim slabs, bold patterns
What a porcelain worktop is
Porcelain slabs are made from fine clays and minerals pressed hard and fired at very high temperatures. The firing fuses the material into a dense, glass-like body that liquid cannot get into. The surface design is printed through the top layer and sealed in at the kiln, so there is nothing to seal at home.
Where porcelain earns its place
Heat is porcelain’s strong point: it came out of a kiln, so a hot pan will not hurt it. It keeps its colour in strong sun as well, so we tend to recommend it beside bifold doors, in conservatories and outside, where some quartz may yellow.
It is a good fit too for anyone who likes the look of marble but not the upkeep. Porcelain marble designs will not etch when lemon juice or a limescale cleaner lands on them.
Edges and chips
Porcelain is hard but more brittle at the edge than quartz or granite. A heavy pan knocked against a square edge can chip it. A mitred edge, or a small bevel, protects the front and also hides the fact that the printed pattern does not go all the way through the slab. We will talk you through the edge options when we quote.
Thickness and the units underneath
Porcelain worktops are often 12 mm thick, sometimes 20 mm. That thin profile looks sharp in a contemporary kitchen and puts less weight on the units, but a thin slab needs firm, even support along its full length, especially around the sink and hob cut-outs. We check the carcasses and any support needed as part of templating.
Common questions
Can porcelain go outside?
Yes. It is one of the few worktop surfaces that copes with frost, rain and strong sun, which is why it suits outdoor kitchens.
Can I chop directly on porcelain?
Use a board. Porcelain is harder than steel, so it will dull your knives quickly, and a ceramic knife can mark it.
Does porcelain need sealing?
No. It is non-porous right through, so there is nothing to seal and nothing to renew.
Is the pattern solid all the way through?
Usually not. The design is on the surface, which is why we often recommend a mitred edge so the pattern wraps around the front.
