Island worktops in Guildford

In most Guildford kitchens the island top is the biggest single piece of stone, and the most noticed. We plan it with you, from the overhang for stools to whether the stone should run down the sides as waterfall ends, then template it once the island carcass is fitted and cut it from a slab chosen for the job.

  • Overhangs for seating
  • Waterfall ends
  • Sink or hob cut-outs

Planning the size

Slabs are only made so big, and a generous island can outgrow one. Where that happens we plan a join, ideally through a sink or hob opening or in the least obvious place, and agree it with you before cutting. Getting it in matters too: one large piece has to come through the front door, down the hall and round corners, so the route gets measured as well as the island.

Seating and overhangs

Most people want stools at the island. Allow roughly 250 to 300 mm of overhang for comfortable knee room. Small overhangs are supported by the stone itself; deeper ones need concealed steel supports or legs, depending on the material and thickness. We confirm what your stone needs when we template.

Waterfall ends

A waterfall end carries the worktop down the side of the island to the floor, usually with a mitred corner so the pattern appears to fold over the edge. It looks especially good with strongly veined quartz, porcelain or marble, and it protects the ends of the island from knocks and kicks. It takes careful slab planning so the veins line up.

A sink or hob in the island

Putting the hob or sink in the island turns it into the main workspace. Plumbing and power need to reach it before the stone goes on, and a hob in an island usually needs a downdraft or ceiling extractor. Decide on the appliances early so the cut-outs can be placed correctly at templating.

Common questions

Can an island top be one piece?

Yes, as long as it fits on one slab and through the doors. If not, we agree a tidy join with you.

Can the island be a different stone from the rest?

Yes, and it is a popular choice: a marble or striking porcelain island with calmer quartz on the wall runs.

What thickness suits an island?

30 mm looks generous on a large island, or a thinner slab with a mitred edge if you want a deeper front without the weight.
