Prices and quotes
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Pricing is free, with no obligation.
What do you need to give me a price?
Approximate lengths and depths of each run or a sketch, the stone you are drawn to and your postcode. A plan from your kitchen designer or a couple of photos also help.
Why are quotes for the same kitchen so different?
Usually because they include different things: templating, openings, edges, upstands, removing old worktops, fitting. See what decides the price for a checklist.
Is there a price list?
No, because every kitchen has a different stone, size, set of openings and route in. Ring 01483 694680 or use the form and we will price yours.
Picking a stone
Which worktop is toughest?
Top of the list are granite, genuine quartzite and porcelain, with quartz just behind and easiest to maintain. Marble is softer and shows its age.
Which worktops never need sealing?
Quartz and porcelain. Natural stones, meaning granite, marble and quartzite, get sealed once installed and need it renewing occasionally.
Can hot pans go straight on stone?
Granite and porcelain cope well with heat. Quartz has resin in it and can mark, so use a trivet. A trivet is a good habit on any worktop.
Does quartz discolour in the sun?
Certain quartz designs may yellow after long exposure to strong sun, which is why we tend to suggest porcelain for garden rooms and outdoor kitchens.
Quartz or quartzite, what is the difference?
Quartz is made with resin in a factory; quartzite is a natural rock. Our quartzite guide explains how to tell them apart.
Is a quartz worktop safe at home?
Yes. Silica is a hazard for whoever cuts the slab, not for the household using it. See our silica guide.
Templating and fitting
Do the units need to be in before you measure?
Yes. We template on fitted, level units, with the sink, tap and hob already chosen.
Can stone go on my current units?
Usually, provided they are sturdy, level and secured to the wall, which we confirm cabinet by cabinet when templating. See worktop replacement.
Will you remove the old worktops?
We can include taking the old worktops out and away in your quote. Just ask.
Who reconnects the sink and hob?
That happens once the stone is down. Gas hobs are a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer only. The quote spells out who handles each part.
Will my worktop have joins?
Only if a run or island is longer than one slab, or splitting it helps get the stone indoors. Positions are agreed with you before cutting.
How thick are stone worktops?
Quartz, granite and marble are usually 20 mm or 30 mm; porcelain is often 12 mm. A mitred edge makes a slim slab look deeper.
Cleaning and care
What is the best way to clean stone?
Warm water and a little gentle washing-up liquid, or a stone cleaner with neutral pH, then a soft dry cloth.
What should I keep off my worktop?
For quartz: scourers, bleach and strong solvents. For marble and other natural stone: vinegar, citrus and acid descalers.
How do I stop limescale building up?
Give the area round the tap a wipe dry after the washing-up so water never evaporates on the stone. The limescale guide covers each stone.
