Victorian Haslemere
The London to Portsmouth railway reached Haslemere on 1 January 1859, and the town grew quickly afterwards as wealthy Londoners built houses in the hills. Through the late 1860s and early 1870s new homes spread along Lower Street towards Shottermill, which joined Haslemere’s urban district in 1933. Many of those houses were built of local brick from works on Wey Hill and Border Road.
