Worktop replacement in Guildford

Many Guildford kitchens have perfectly good units under tired worktops: swollen laminate by the sink, scorched wood near the hob. Swapping only the worktops for quartz, granite, porcelain or marble transforms the room for a fraction of the cost and disruption of a new kitchen. We check the cabinets, template and install the new stone.

  • Keep the units you have
  • Laminate or wood out, stone in
  • Units checked first

Will your units take stone?

Stone is heavy and does not flex, so the cabinets under it have to be up to the job. We want cabinets that are level end to end, screwed firmly to the wall and together, and dry, particularly the sink unit. Most kitchens fitted in the last couple of decades are fine. Where a cabinet needs packing out, a new leg or a repair, you hear about it before the stone is priced, never on the day.

How a replacement job runs

  1. You describe the kitchen and send a sketch or some photos, and we come back with a price.
  2. We template the kitchen, either with the old worktops still on or after they come off, depending on the room.
  3. The stone is cut to that template, openings and all.
  4. On fitting day the old worktops come out and the stone goes in, joins are finished and edges checked.
  5. Your sink, tap and hob are reconnected by the right people.

You get timings specific to your kitchen, so you can plan for the days without a sink.

Sink, tap and hob: decide now

Changing the worktop is the best moment to change the sink, because every opening is cut into the stone before it arrives. An undermount sink looks much cleaner on stone than the old inset bowl and lets you sweep crumbs straight in. Have the sink, tap and hob models decided before templating. A gas hob must be reconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Upstands and tiles

Removing laminate worktops often disturbs the bottom row of tiles. A stone upstand, usually 50 to 100 mm high, finishes the join neatly and saves retiling the whole wall. Behind the hob, a full-height stone or porcelain splashback is easier to wipe than grout. See upstands and splashbacks.

Common questions

Is replacing just the worktops worth it?

Where the cabinets are sound, yes: new stone changes the look and feel of the kitchen without paying for new units.

How much disruption is there?

On a simple replacement, the kitchen is out of action only briefly around fitting day. Your quote comes with timings for your own job.

Can I keep my old sink?

Often, if it suits stone. Inset sinks can stay; many people switch to an undermount sink at the same time.

Will you take the old worktops away?

We can include removing and disposing of the old worktops in the quote. Just ask.
