What decides the price of stone worktops
Prices for one Guildford kitchen can vary a long way between companies, and it is rarely because one company is simply cheaper. It usually comes down to what is included. These are the things that move the price of a stone worktop, and what to check when you compare quotes.
The stone itself
Within each material there is a big spread. Plain quartz designs usually cost less than heavily veined ones; common granites cost less than rare colours; and some porcelain and marble slabs are premium products. Choosing between two similar-looking designs can make a real difference.
How much stone
Price follows the area of stone and how many slabs it takes. An L-shaped kitchen with an island may need two or three slabs, and a long run that needs a join takes planning. Thickness counts as well, since a 30 mm slab holds more stone than a 20 mm one.
Openings and edges
Each sink, hob and tap opening adds work, and an undermount sink costs more than an inset one because the cut edge is polished. Drainer grooves, curved corners, mitred edges and decorative profiles each add a little more.
Upstands, splashbacks and sills
A low upstand, a hob splashback, a full-height panel or a matching window sill are all extra pieces of stone, often cut from the same slab. List them at the start and the quote will be complete.
Access, removal and other trades
Carrying stone up stairs or through a tight hallway takes more people and time. Removing the old worktops, reconnecting a sink or hob, and any tiling or electrical work are separate jobs. Check which of these each quote includes.
Comparing quotes
- Same stone, same thickness, same edge?
- Templating, cutting, fitting and sealing all included?
- Every opening, upstand and splashback listed?
- Old worktop removal and disposal included or not?
Common questions
Can I get a price without a visit?
Yes. Approximate sizes, a sketch and your chosen stone give a first figure; templating settles the exact sizes later.
Do I need a new kitchen to have stone worktops?
No. Sound units can take stone, and that is a fraction of the price of new cabinets.
